The European Ecovillage Conference 2017

Living the future today: Solidarity, Resilience & Hope

The Global Ecovillage Network of Europe announces its 21st edition of the yearly European Ecovillage Conference, for the first time in Sweden.

This year, we are gathering around the themes of solidarity, resilience and hope, with the intent of creating a better future by starting to live it today. Our motivation is to replace obsolete models of living with innovative ideas and projects that are in harmony with our more beautiful nature and environment.

This gathering will bring change-makers, activists, experts, intentional community members, and all those friends who dream, hope and act for a conscious and sustainable lifestyle. Together we will nurture meaningful ideas to grow into purposeful actions.

Be part of the movement and join us in magical Ängsbacka for a multi-faceted festival on sustainability with many parallel events, high energy and deep relaxation.

Meet the people that walk their talk

The people that walk their talk will share their experiences and know-how, mostly through workshops and talks but also through art, music, dance, film and exhibitions. What does it mean to live the future today?

The program will unfold here– and we are especially proud to have Keynote speakers Charles Eisenstein and Helena Norberg-Hodge with us.

The invitation

In an era of uncertain ecological and political futures, Robert Hall, GEN Europe’s Council President, invites you to “come and network with Europe’s grassroots change-makers. Join us to explore ways to live a richer life while being of greater service to humanity and the planet ”.

It is an invitation to come together and connect – to ourselves, to each other, to the world and to spirit. From that place let´s share solutions and create possibilities for “the more beautiful world our hearts know is possible”. We envision the conference to be a birthplace for initiatives and exciting ideas – a hub for projects for a better world.

Together we will explore communal living topics such as the sharing economy and social currencies, food sovereignty, renewable energies, non-violent communication, group facilitation, governance models, collective and consensual decision making, bio-architecture and ecological activism. And of course there will be many community bonding activities, complemented by morning activities centering to get into our lovely bodies as well as concerts, dance and music in the evenings. There will be plenty of opportunities for networking; it´s simply the best place to meet Ecovillagers from all over Europe!

Meetings in the Ängsbacka gardens

Who is coming?

The gathering has attracted and inspired thousands of people over the last 21 years. People wanting to learn more about sustainable communities; ecovillagers and aspiring ecovillagers, friends from like-minded networks such as Permaculture, Transition Towns and Gaia Education amongst many others, will join us once again. Anyone truly interested in a more sustainable lifestyle is welcome!

Shall I go?

  • Are you curious about ecovillages?
  • Do you want to find out more about living in and contributing to a more sustainable way of living on this planet?
  • Would you like to meet hundreds of inspiring and like-minded people to build friendships and common projects with?
  • Do you live in an ecovillage, intentional community or work on an exciting project and would like to share your experiences?
  • Would you like to talk about things that really matter to you? Connect on a deep and meaningful level? Be reminded that you belong to a global tribe and are part of a growing movement?

If your answer to any of these questions is yes, the conference is exactly the right event for you and we are looking forward to meeting you in July!

Participants in the 5 day event can expect a family-friendly, drug and alcohol free experience with the possibility to choose activities based on their interests, managed campsites with outdoor facilities and all inclusive vegetarian meals.

“A more beautiful world IS possible…
and you will experience a part of it
during the gathering at Ӓngsbacka”

♥ Meet the Ecovillages

Imagine walking through all of Europe, visiting exciting ecovillages, hearing inspiring stories and meeting amazing people. Impossible? No, it actually only takes one very special afternoon in July… and YOU! This year we are replacing power point presentations from ecovillages with a huge interactive live outdoor map event in which you are welcomed by ecovillagers presenting their homes and work.

♥ Market space

Every day around lunchtime a pop up market is inviting you to browse through specialities made by ecovillagers, inspiring books and receive more information on organizations and initiatives working towards a more sustainable world.

♥ Sharing tribes/home groups

For the time of the conference, you will have your own ”tribe” around you; a close group of people to travel through the conference together, meeting and sharing insights, inspirations and experiences every day.

♥ Morning offerings
 & evening program

Each day will be framed by Yoga, meditation and movement offerings for the early birds around 7 am and a relaxing or sacred space in the evening. There will be opportunities to get together, get into our bodies and move our bodies in the way it wants to be moved. We love singing together and our band and their guests will get you into the right mood for celebrating.

♥ Healing sessions and body work offerings

Tickets for individual healing sessions will be available for participants and volunteers at the registration desk throughout the conference.

♥ Food made with love

We offer tasty and nutritious vegetarian food 3 times a day (included in the ticket). The café is filled with delicious desserts, snacks and sandwiches as well as a large variety of raw food treats and non alcoholic beverages and smoothies.

♥ Swedish Sauna

When you’re ready to wind down after a long day, take a steamy rest in our large wood-heated sauna. Bring an extra towel.

♥ Say hello to the nature

Ängsbacka is situated in abundant nature with surrounding forests, a majestic garden and lakes nearby to swim on hot days.

Biography:

Bjørn Grinde received his education in natural sciences, psychology, and anthropology from the University of Oslo. He works as a senior scientist at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health - focusing on mental health and happiness. His primary interest is to understand the process of evolution, particularly how it formed the human brain and our capacity to enjoy life. Sustainer - A sustainable container for desaster relieve, refugee camps and festivals

Biography:

Attention: I, Thomas Heuser, am doing this for Brian. He is really not into computers. The Bio I will have to add later.

Brian Holden, 65 years old, visionary gardener and much more

Description of what you offer (REQUIRED, shown on website):

We all need to cook, wash and use the toilet.
The use of local pelleted bio-waste in pyrolisis stoves can be used for cooking and hot water, and leads to the making of charcoal. Using this charcoal in compost toilets gives realatively smell free toilets. In these toilets, where urine is seperated from solids, ?charged? biochare is produced, in a month, and later, safe ?humanure?.
These, combined with composted kitchen waste, produce ?Terra Preta?.
Put all these elements in and arround a shipping container and we have the Sustainer.

This workshop will explore the possibilities of producing such a unit, as a proto-type. Once that is proven as viable, then with added water, such a Sustainer, requiring no ?ground work?, and no pollution, will meet these three basic human requirements. While the making of Terra Preta and water for irrigation, will promote local food production, so completing the cycle.
The global oppotunities that this notion presents are vast, and, time permiting, will also be explored.

Authentic Adulthood Initiatory Processes

Can butterflies take flight while still in their chrysalis? No.
Then why would you think that human beings can deliver their archetypal calling while still captured inside their childhood survival strategy?

Biography:

I want GEN to replace the United Nations.
I want nanonations ( http://www.nanonations.org ) to replace mega-governments and corporations through creative responsibility.
Since 1975 I have been co-inventing ways for small groups to reclaim personal and local authority beginning with the context of the culture they live in. This involves personally growing up, which has been banned in western civilization ever since the capitalist patriarchal empire took over. This particular adulthood initiation work is called Possibility Management.
I have written a couple books ( http://www.nextculturepress.org ), been videoed delivering some talks and processes ( https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwtDrMNHYxXQiBUz6APiz9g ) made a few blogs ( http://www.clintoncallahan.blogspot.com ) and share my other projects at http://www.clintoncallahan.org.
I think the secret to successful initiations is making the space so connected and safe that a person can allow their internal structure to reorder into a higher level of elegance and sophistication. So much camaraderie emerges that the work has inspired me my whole life.

Description of what you offer (REQUIRED, shown on website):

After a short but strong introduction about the differences between indigenous and next culture initiations, and the differences between education and initiation, we will divide into pairs and small groups to engage experiential steps during guided processes. Each initiation involves taking personal responsibility for an inner resource or a distinction that we could not previously imagine could be taken responsibility for or distinguished. The outcomes of a successful initiations is radical responsibility in a new domain that you can then deliver for others.

Make Love the Ecology of Your Life;
Enjoy the Experience of Ecosexual Love

Make love the ecology of your life with Dr. SerenaGaia
"A world where it is safe to love is a world where it is safe to live."

Biography:

The Facilitator:

Dr. SerenaGaia is the sacred name of Serena Anderlini-D'Onofrio, PhD. She is an experienced teacher, facilitator, and public speaker. As a cultural theorist, she studies the ecology of love and is the founder of 3WayKiss. Her prophetic books have inspired readers around the world, including Eros (2006), Gaia (2009), and Ecosexuality (2015), the first collection on this topic.

Description of what you offer (REQUIRED, shown on website):

This workshop is designed to support participants experience one another as ?metamours,? people who share a partner they love: the Earth. It helps people evolve a consciousness about the inclusive and fluid aspects of ecosexuality, and make love the ecology of their lives.
Roles include giver (lover), receiver (beloved), and witness (also dubbed ?moon,? or panderer, or hosting ecosystem). Agreed-upon body areas for touch are limited to the head, face, shoulders, and upper torso areas. The giver?s intent is offering pleasure and loving touch. The receiver?s intent is absorbing the loving energy and enjoying .the pleasure. The witness?s intent is providing the safe space hospitable to, and conducive of love. Each participant embodies each role at least once. People are encouraged to imagine the witness as a beautiful ecosystem, a natural host/ess whose energy is conducive of love. At the end of each round, participants share about their experience.
Some of the questions addressed include: How does it feel to be the compersive planet that hosts all of our loves? As we witness the lovers, can we find it in our heart to experience their pleasure as our own?
Participants come away with an enhanced awareness of the connections between loving fluidly and inclusively and appreciating the spaces that host this love. Many report they enjoy the role of witness more than anticipated. As people envision the Earth as a generous and compersive lover, many realize they can make love the ecology of their lives.

Embracing the shadow

We can't access wisdom through our minds but through our hearts, because wisdom has a transpersonal quality that only the heart shares.

Biography:

SHADOW WORK, SHAMANISM
Irene Goikolea, facilitator, integral coach and PhD in deep psychology, has been working for more than 25 years toward the awakening of consciousness, facilitating individual and group processes of personal growth and development. Her experience in this field goes back to the circles of women she organized at the beginning of the 90\'s with the intention of awakening to the sacred feminine aspect. The qualities of the sacred feminine aspect are interrelationship, the collective, integration, unity, care for the other, healing, nurturance, compassionate action and sentient capacity. Irene focuses on awakening these qualities to be able to embrace all our excluded parts.

Throughout her career, Irene has promoted the reconciliation of the opposites, as well as the integration of our most excluded parts, what Jung called the shadow. Her methodology includes different perspectives, such as the shamanic tradition, Jungian psychology, Hakomi, Process Work and the wisdom of the ancestral legacy of her Basque roots. She is also in tune with contemporary movements that promote the development of a collective paradigm, where the culture of the ?we? prevails over the culture of the ?I?.

Her commitment with the awakening of the feminine and its impact on the development of collective consciousness, based on the above, led her to inspire the materialization of the Amalurra project, made of three intentional communities situated in the Basque country, Andalusia and Catalonia (Spain). Amalurra has become a benchmark among Europe?s most established communities.

Embracing the shadow

The reflection of our excluded parts (the shadow) in the current conflicts of humanity

In this workshop, we will explore the concept of the shadow: each of the characters, or parts, that make up our total being and that control our lives autonomously whenever we repress or exclude them. We will also learn how it arises, how to identify it, how to interact with it, how it finds reflection in today?s conflicts and how to turn it into an ally in our collaborative purpose in relation to the those conflicts. Being aware of how we project our shadow on the outside world can help us identify it. In this experiential workshop, we will carry out some practices with the intention of becoming aware of our excluded parts. The final goal is to be able to embrace them, experiencing the power and fullness of feeling complete with what we are, both light and shadow.

WAYS OF DOING DEVELOPMENT DIFFERENTLY: Methodologies for adaptive & systemic development.

?We need to stop doing things right to begin doing the right things?B. Ramalingam.

Biography:

Consultant and facilitator on organizational change and project management through Complex Systems approach, agile and participatory technologies.
I have been working in development for 8 years in several countries in Africa and South America. In 2013 I took time off to reflect and re-think my work, as I began having doubts about the impacts.

I stopped my work to move to the UK and study a MA at Schumacher College (2013-14). Through encountering, ecology, holistic science, systems thinking, complexity theory, Gaia theory, permaculture some answers began to unfold.

Some of my published work includes: Collaborative tools for Social Organizations and Activism and spirituality.

ECOVILLAGES, as a RESURRECTION of THE COMMONS!

?Only the purpose of a coherent community, fully alive in both the world and in the minds of its members, can carry us beyond fragmentation, contradiction, and negativity. \\\" Wendel Berry, American poet

Biography:

Environmental Journalist and Filmmaker, specially interested about
questions, and critique of the western development paradigm.

Environmental teacher for the course One Year in Transition (1YT) in Sweden.
Initiator of small Ecovillage Charlottendal built around a small farm in Järna Sweden.

Description of what you offer (REQUIRED, shown on website):

Even if heterogeneous ECOVILLAGES collectively represent a renewal of the concept of ?the commons?
existing in between private or collective ownership on one hand to governmental ownership (eminent domain) on the other.
As the concept of the commons got lost in western mindset we have increasingly mismanaged our common resources like land, air and water. To this day governments are still selling common resources for commercial exploitation. With growing challenges to mainstream society, the resurrection of the commons idea is part of a growing movement to enhance ?glocality? and a more resilient future.

Alternative Currency for GEN and Ecosystem Restoration Camps

"Without a completely independent financial system we cannot fully step into a regenerative culture."- Dr. Rudolf Lenz

Biography:

Both Felipe Alves, MSc, and Dr. Rudolf Lenz are enthusiastic about empowering GEN to make use of Infinity Economics to embrace GEN's diversity while maintaining the sovereignty of each ecovillage regarding its currency. The idea is to provide an ethical speculation-proof platform for currencies and other exchange mechanisms specifically applicable to the non-material riches of the ecovillage environment.

Description of what you offer (REQUIRED, shown on website):

A new crypto-currency called Infinity Economics has recently gone public. This system is specifically designed to serve as an economic platform worldwide, especially useful for supporting a wide diversity of economic needs in global movements such as GEN and the Ecosystem Restoration Camps while providing a unifying field of economic exchange. The Infinity is in many ways a new generation of blockchain based crypto-currencies. One key for a crypto-currency's success is an exchange platform for products and services something like an EBay for e-currencies. This is coming to life with Infinity Economics. Dr. Rudolf Lenz from Spain is explaining and answering questions about the Infinity currency and blockchain technology as an alternative and decentralized economic system, and Filipe Alves, MSc. from University of Lisbon, Portugal explaining and answering questions about GEN's progress towards adopting a crypto-currency for global ecovillage needs.

Living the New Paradigm how real closeness create commitment and continuity in communities

What is possible when you go against \"the story of separation\", decide to stay when it gets hard and commit to do the work that it takes to get really close?

Biography:

Sofi Håkansson and Andreas Fogelquist, former couple and parents of a boy, run together with Iben Snebang, Andreas's new partner, Nackunga Community in Hölö, south of Stockholm. They have all worked extensively with personal development and through the insights gained from starting up and running a community they have found that focusing on close and lasting relationship is in the core of building successful and sustainable communities.

Description of what you offer (REQUIRED, shown on website):

A challenge communities often face is how to reach stability over time and have people commit longterm to a group or a project.

When we get close to eachother, when we go all in, our attachment patterns from early childhood tend to play out. We get scared, want to drop out and start looking for alternatives. Society of today is runned by ?a story of separation? (Charles Eisenstein) ? a pattern of turning away and leaving when life gets hard. In a culture where freedom of choice is one of our most cherished rights, we?re not being supported to stick to what we once chose. It?s tempting to always perceive the grass as greener on the other side.

By deciding to stay, by committing to do the work that it takes to get really close, we gain a grounded state of connectedness, happiness, meaningfulness and creativity.

In this workshop we want to explore, together with you, how we through insight in ?the story of separation? as well as in attachment theory, can reach our longing for clan and build sustainable and healthy communities.

"LifeDance"

"Only the once who transform remain related to me." translated from the german poet Christian Morgenstern: "Nur wer sich wandelt bleibt mir verwandt."

Biography:

I was born 1970 in Heidelberg (Germany) and lived in Venezuela for 5 years as a child, travelling extensively with my parents. An accomplished singer – flutist – dancer of contact improvisation, I have been active since 1995 in my profession as a body-worker and therapist for breath, speech and voice. In 2003 I co-founded the intentional community Schloss Glarisegg in Switzerland and have been a crucial co-creator of its structural development. Since 2005 I meditate Vipassana. I learned to be entrepreneur for a community project, where 1,4 million swiss francs run through within one year. The community has grown to holding more than 50 members and is widely known for its strong emphasis on exploring tools of social communication.
My source for inspiration is dancing contact-improvisation, singing and making music together with Rüdiger in LifeDance. Since 2014 we created the 3 days long “LifeDance", called “art of change”. Since 2016 I started to make the whole February an Ecovillage Design Education course, called “Creating a transformative Culture” with 50 young adults from more the 10 different nations. The red thread is my passion for a transformative culture, which gives everyone, us as communities and the whole humanity the possibility to grow into its own full potential.

Description of what you offer (REQUIRED, shown on website):

- nonverbal community building
- be fully yourself ... among others... the source of creativity
- re-discover the playfull child within yourself
- be an „inner world class musician“

Description:

“LifeDance” is a nonverbal improvisatory creation space - in which we meet ourself and others on an essential level of being.
It's an open exploration setting leading the individual towards unfolding unimagined aspects, possibilities and skills and guiding the group into a deep connectedness within just one hour…
Experience how it feels to share space & time with others while being radically yourself… and at the same time creating something collective and artful.
The basic means of expression - the human voice and body and various kinds of musical instruments lead to an authentic and magic place of creativity and togetherness including all qualities of being, a place where our restrictive cultural “you-have-to“s and “you-should-not”s are washed away...

Exceptional musical instrument creations of all kinds that invite to be approached intuitively are provided by Rüdiger (for details see: www.klangkunstwerk.ch ) - but you may bring along your own ones as well.

Susanne Ratka

Community Research Project

Biography:

For many years Susanne Ratka has been interested in new forms of living together - especially for life in communities. She has dealt with the topic theoretically and visited various projects.

In the 80ties and 90ties she lived in a community with spiritual focus for more than 10 years and was a guest in Auroville, a community in Tamil Nadu/South India for several months in 2007 (www.auroville.org ). In the last years she visited the ecovillage Siebenlinden (www.siebenlinden.de ) as well as the ZEGG-Center for the experimental art of living (www.zegg.de ).

Since 2008, she has been managing the Internationales Begegnungszentrum der Wissenschaft, IBZ, a place to live for international guest scientists and their families.

Susanne Ratka believes that we are facing a heavy social and spiritual crisis today, an upheaval on the way to a post-growth society and we are setting the course for the future now. That we need to rethink and question our way of living and look at brave people who have been exploring and testing new social models for many decades: in particular intentional communities. Communities and eco-thinkers around the world are the leading edge and hope bearers of this transition movement and have a lot to say and teach us.

From July 2017, Susanne Ratka will therefore begin a project on communities in the international context, which presupposes the thesis that our society urgently needs new ideas, impulses, insights and values.

Description of what you offer (REQUIRED, shown on website):

How do we want to live tomorrow?

If given the option, many people would prefer a living situation less isolated than what most of us experience today. The human being seems to have a natural preference for living in community. Yet, only a tiny percentage of the population currently enjoys the pleasures of being embedded in a group of like-minded people who share the same values, go through the various life challenges with each others and also celebrate life together.

The majority of people in our modern society remain trapped in relative isolation, but then there are those few who actually dare to take the leap and start to build an intentional community* together.

The aim of the Community Research Project is to find out and publicly share the unique accomplishments and wisdom that each of these communities have gained over a long period of growth, and how society at large can benefit from their insights.

The travelling part of this project starts with my visit to the European Ecovillage Conference in Ängsbacka where I will be presenting this project and networking with others.
