GEN European Ecovillage Conference
16 Jul - 21 Jul
The European Ecovillage Conference 2017
Living the future today: Solidarity, Resilience & Hope
Get ready for the yearly gathering of Ecovillages and intentional communities where the inspired and the inspiring come together. Come surf the good vibes, enjoy the Swedish summer light and soak up the nature and magic of Ängsbacka.
Meet the people that walk their talk
The Global Ecovillage Network of Europe announces its 21st edition of the yearly European Ecovillage Conference, for the first time in Sweden:
This years theme is Conscious Happiness: Living the future today. Solidarity, Resilience & Hope. We know that a more beautiful world is possible, and we will explore this together as in communal living topics such as the sharing economy and social currencies, food sovereignty, renewable energies, non-violent communication, group facilitation, governance models, collective and consensual decision making, bio-architecture and ecological activism. And of course a lot of community glue activities.
The people that walk their talk will share experiences and know-how, mostly through workshops and talks but also through art, music, dance, film and exhibitions.
Round-table talks, documentaries, and presentations from the ecovillages themselves – new and old – are also year-in, year-out favourites. Morning activities to get into our lovely bodies, concerts, dance and music in the evenings to come together.
Join us to learn ways to live a richer life while being of greater service to humanity and the planet. The program will unfold here
As we explore Resilience, we invite guests to explore an interactive exposition on Ecovillage Sustainability Technologies to showcase the solutions. It is a demonstration lab featuring sustainable technologies such as solar ovens, thermo-compost heating systems and water purifiers designed in European Ecovillages. And more.
Who is coming?
We can expect some 600 enthusiasts from all over Europe
Ecovillagers and aspiring ecovillagers who want to learn more, our friends from like-minded networks such as Permaculture, Transition Towns and Gaia Education amongst many others, will join us once again. And of course the local community and people interested in a more sustainable lifestyle(s).
Global Ecovillage Network
GEN – Global Ecovillage Network, was founded 20 years ago and represents over 100 countries in the 5 continents. GEN-Europe is a network that connects, sustains and diffuses the work of ecovillages and communities. Ecovillages form one of the few viable models for sustainable regional development. GEN-Europe has representation in Brussels under the umbrella of ECOLISE, together with other intercontinental networks; also, it has a consultative status at the UN for educational material for 10 years.
Ängsbacka – festivals, courses and community
Ängsbacka, outside Karlstad in Sweden, is a vital meeting place in Scandinavia for people who want to live a more conscious life, live from the heart and care for our planet. Since 1997 thousands of people have been touched by the warm, open, loving atmosphere during workshops, festivals and visits at Ängsbacka. Ängsbacka is a full member of GEN Europe since 2016. Welcome to be part of the Ängsbacka Magic!
Year around about 20 people from around the globe live and work at Ängsbacka as volunteers. During the festival summer we are sometimes almost 200. We are also a part of EVS (European Volunteer Service) where young people (18-30) can work and learn at Ängsbacka for free, supported by the EU. Read more about Ängsbacka, travel, our community and our volunteering opportunities.
Warmly welcome to Sweden and Ängsbacka – all you changemakers!

Program and activities
♥ Experts and speakers
This year’s theme of Living the future today: Solidarity, Resilience & Hope will weave into conference workshops and activity tracks, tied together by keynote speakers Charles Eisenstein and Helena Norberg-Hodge.
CHARLES EISENSTEIN is a speaker and writer focusing on themes of human culture and identity. He is the author of several books, most recently Sacred Economics and The More Beautiful World our Hearts Know is Possible. His background includes a degree in mathematics and philosophy from Yale, a decade in Taiwan as a translator, and stints as a college instructor, a yoga teacher, and a construction worker. He currently writes and speaks full-time. He lives in Asheville, North Carolina with his wife and four children.
HELENA NORBERG-HODGE is a pioneer of the ‘new economy’ movement. She has been promoting an economics of personal, social and ecological well-being for more than thirty years. She is an author, filmmaker and director of Local Futures with the mission to protect and renew ecological and social well being by promoting a systemic shift away from economic globalization towards localization.
She is the producer and co-director of the award-winning documentary The Economics of Happiness, and is the author of Ancient Futures: Learning from Ladakh, described as “an inspirational classic”. She was honored with the Right Livelihood Award (or ‘Alternative Nobel Prize’) for her groundbreaking work in Ladakh, and received the 2012 Goi Peace Prize for contributing to “the revitalization of cultural and biological diversity, and the strengthening of local communities and economies worldwide.”
As we explore Resilience, we invite guests to explore an interactive exposition on Ecovillage Sustainability Technologies to showcase those inventions that have put ecovillages at the forefront in the fight to contain and reverse Climate Change and its spiraling side-effects.
♥ Ecovillages making presentations
- New and older ecovillages share their solutions on what has worked for them. How did we build our community? How did we get EU-fundings? How did we build our strawbale houses? How do we take decisions?
- As an example of Solidarity, representatives from GEN Europe’s refugee-support project, will describe coordinated efforts by ecovillagers to provide direct support to migrants and asylum seekers arriving in Europe.
There is an invitation for those who would like to showcase or present their solutions. Check in later for the application form.
♥ Music & Dance
There will be opportunities to get together, get into our bodies and move our bodies in the way it wants to be moved. Playful, or extatic. There may even be outdoor dance if the weather is happy with us. We love singing together and our band and their guests will get you into the mood.
♥ Morning offerings
Yoga, meditation and movement are offered for the early birds around 7 am.
♥ Sharing / home groups
You will have your own ”family” during the gathering where you will meet and share what is alive in you at this very moment. An opportunity to connect to yourself and with the same people all week.
♥ Say hello to the nature
Ängsbacka is situated in abundant nature with surrounding forests, a majestic garden and lakes nearby to swim on hot days.
♥ Swedish Sauna
When you’re ready to wind down after a long day, take a steamy rest in our large wood-heated sauna. Bring an extra towel.
♥ Food made with love
We offer tasty and nutritious vegetarian food 3 times a day(included in the ticket). The café is filled with delicious desserts, snacks and sandwiches as well as a large variety of raw food treats and non alcoholic beverages and smoothies
What is GEN – Global Ecovillage Network?
Ecovillages and Intentional Communities
The Global Ecovillage Network consists of a constantly expanding network of intentional communities, ecovillages and national ecovillage networks, bridging all cultures and continents.
- GEN envisions the emergence of a diverse yet shared global pool of wisdom for sustainable living.
- GEN believes that the most underutilised resource we have is the good intentions and creativity of citizens and our willingness to make a difference.
- GEN promotes the building of community and solidarity as core to transition to resilience.
- GEN-Europe promotes the development of sustainable settlements in Europe and the Middle East.
GEN – Connecting Communities for a Sustainable World
The Global Ecovillage Network was set up in 1995 to support the experimental creation and preservation of human settlements that not only sustain, but regenerate their social and natural environments.
Ecovillages are communities with vibrant social structures, vastly diverse, yet united in common ecological, economic, social and cultural values and goals. They spring from the good intentions and creativity of citizens, and their willingness to make a difference.
Today GEN contains an innovative alliance between intentional communities (with some of the lowest per capita carbon footprints in the industrialized world) and networks of traditional villages.
GEN-Europe is the European ecovillage association promoting social resilience, environmental protection and restoration of nature through the concept of ecovillages as models for sustainable human settlements. We actively support the development of ecovillages and networks in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
GEN-Europe is a membership organisation founded in 1996 and open to a wide range of projects regardless of their political, religious or cultural backgrounds.
GEN-Europe forms part of GEN International, an NGO with consultative status at the UN-Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) commission, and a partner of United Nations Institute for Training and Research, UNITAR.

International Course & Festival Center
Ängsbacka is an international course and festival center with participants, workshop leaders and volunteers from all over the world. Therefore please note that the main language during the festivals often is English but some of the workshops can be in a different language, for instance Swedish or Norwegian.
- The festival ticket includes camping at Ängsbacka’s beautiful green camping field, which is located in direct connection to the festival area. Bring your own tent and don´t forget to bring equipment suitable for the warm as well as the cold and for a rainy summer day.
- At an additional fee there are sometimes beds to rent indoors at the festival area; in double room, 4-6 bed room and dormitory. For availability see the tab “Price and booking”.
- We place men and women separately unless you have booked a whole room. Please bring earplugs if you are sound sensitive – the sound can sometimes be quite loud in the festival area. All our accommodations are hostel standard with shared shower and toilet.
- Please bring your own sheets and towels. You might want to bring an extra towel for the sauna or swimming.
- You can rent a space for your camper or caravan during the festival, without electricity. Book well in advance!
- It is also possible to rent private accommodation in the nearby village of Molkom. Most accommodations are located at walking distance (1-1,5 km) to Ängsbacka. Please contact us if you are interested and we’ll send you a list with contact-information of the people who let out rooms, apartments, houses and campers/caravans.
The festival ticket includes breakfast, lunch and dinner. At Ängsbacka we offer a vegetarian diet prepared with love. We use locally produced and organic products to a large extent. For practical reasons we can´t meet needs from other allergies or diets during festivals.
- The Cafe is a cozy and comfortable meeting place for new friendships and deep conversation over a latte or a mild herbal tea. You can also buy organic bakery, delicious sandwiches and healthy drinks. The atmosphere often get lively during Open Stage where you can take the opportunity to share a song, poem or just improvise.
